Together to End StrokeThe first annual Tampa Bay Stroke Heroes award party will be hosted by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association this month. The event celebrates fewer deaths due to stroke; stroke has moved from the Number 4 cause of death to the Number 5 cause of death. It’s so important to know the signs of stroke and to call 9-1-1. A quick response can save someone’s life if that person is having a stroke. Get more information here.

Communication impairment, such as aphasia, apraxia, or dysarthria, is the second most common disability consequence of stroke. People with aphasia often lose their friends, because friends don’t know how to communicate with them anymore. They may no longer be able to work, and they may have difficulty doing the activities they used to do – even around the home.

But the right supports can provide communication accessibility – the ability to access activities and social relationships despite communication difficulties. Mike and Kathy Caputo have been honored with a nomination as a Tampa Bay Stroke Hero because they founded a nonprofit in St. Petersburg, Voices of Hope for Aphasia, that works to provide communication accessibility in activities and relationships for people living with aphasia.

Congratulations, Mike and Kathy!
